Moving to a new house can be an expensive and stressful process; especially after you have already gone through the process of purchasing a new property, or choosing a new home to rent. The good news is that there are ways to reduce the amount of money you spend on a move, which can also help to alleviate some of the stress.
We are going to consider ways in which you can save money when you are moving to a new home. Hopefully, you should find them useful when you make your next house move.
Do you really need to take it with you?
Moving to a new home provides you with an excellent opportunity to get rid of all the items you do not really need. It’s a good idea to have a sort out, before you start the packing process. The less stuff you have to move, the more likely you are to save money on removal costs.
Make sure you are methodical when you sort, and remember to be ruthless. Do you really need to keep an item, or are you just attached to it?
- Label some boxes, “keep”, “rubbish”, “recycling”, “charity” and “to sell”.
- Sort through your property, one room at a time, and place items in one of the boxes.
- Once you have finished dispose of the items as appropriate, and start to pack the items you are keeping. You can do this when you have completed a room sort out, or when you have sorted your entire home, depending on the amount of stuff you have.
Sorting takes time, so do not forget to give yourself plenty. You may even want to start while you are still looking for a new home.
Bringing in the new
This may sound as though we are encouraging you to spend more, not save, but if you need new items in your home, it’s a good time to buy them. If you need a new TV, there is little point wasting effort and money taking your current one with you. You may as well make the purchase now. Likewise, if your mattress has seen better days, it’s easier to take a look at some mattresses online, and have a new one delivered after you move.
If you move everything to your new property, and then decide to buy a selection of new items, you end up wasting money on removals when you could have just disposed of the old household items before the move.
Making use of free packing options
Packing is one of the biggest jobs, when it comes to moving to a new home. It can also end up costing you a significant amount of money, by the time you have purchased packing materials, or paid a removal firm to do the packing for you.
There are ways of reducing the cost of packing. Why not ask around and see if anyone has packing crates that you can use free of charge? You can also pay a visit to a local shopping centre, and see if any of the stores have some boxes you can have. If you do re-use boxes, make sure they are secure. It’s a good idea to re-tape them, so that they are firm enough to withstand the move.
If you are struggling to pack on your own, there is no need to enlist the help of a removal firm. You can just ask your family and friends to help. Supply them with pizza and something to drink, and you can turn it into a social occasion. Doing this is a lot cheaper than paying for your stuff to be packed.
If you are thinking of moving to a new home, hopefully our tips can help you reduce the costs of doing so.
